How a 'chromosome map' is created

Here, the colour magnitude diagram of the core of NGC 3201 (HST/ACS catalogue, Sarajedini+, 2007) is shown.
With focus on the RGB it is possible to rectify several filter combinations and end up with the so called 'chromosome map':
This can for example be used to analyse the binary star content:
And shows in this case that NGC 3201 seems to have more binaries in the lower population than in the upper
